Define fields and supporting evidence

Specify required fields, types, allowed values, and the representation of uncertainty. Distinguish a missing value from numeric zero. Require important fields to reference a page, passage location, or source identifier the application can verify. Where evidence is absent, preserve unknown rather than asking the model to invent a complete table.

Choose a model and protocol currently confirmed to support the necessary input. Validate a small set of synthetic documents first. Returning JSON does not establish factual correctness, and the availability of any structured-output capability must be checked against current official information.

Run deterministic checks first

After parsing, validate types, required fields, enumerations, date ordering, and business relationships that can be calculated directly. Keep failure categories and appropriate evidence under a minimum-retention policy. Silently inserting default values can make an incorrect result appear valid, so make any transformation explicit.

Treat extracted text as untrusted content. Do not concatenate it into database commands or executable scripts. High-impact fields such as amounts, payment destinations, and permission changes need independent business checks even when their format is correct. A model’s own confidence statement is not sufficient approval evidence.

Route review by risk

Send missing evidence, conflicting rules, and high-impact outcomes to a human review queue. Show reviewers the necessary source excerpt alongside extracted fields while hiding unrelated personal data. Record corrections, reasons, ownership, and the relationship between input and output versions.

Distinguish automatically validated, human-confirmed, failed, and pending results before publication. Reuse redacted failure samples to improve checks and repeat affected cases after configuration changes. Any accuracy conclusion needs its dataset and conditions; this article supplies no invented score or benchmark.
